Does Company Conduct Pre-Employment Screening?

When you apply to a big company, they usually conduct for a pre-employment screening, either before or after the 1st interview. Not all company does this kind of screening process, but a lot of companies would want to make sure that the person they would welcome to their company is honest, sane, and not a spy (yes, there can be bogus employees that are actually a spy sent by a competitor.

As long as you had a good background, you don't need to worry about it.

If you're a company seeking for your perfect employee, they you can hire a company that can do the pre-employment screening for you.  Well there's no perfect employee really.  But screening would help you get better employees.

Are Online Administrative Clerical Jobs In?

Have you heard of working in administrative clerical jobs, but instead of going to an office for are time-in-time-out, in-the-office work, you work in the comfort of your home or anywhere you are as long as you are able to do your work?

A lot are into this kind of job. Most of those who seek such jobs are stay-at-home mommies, single parents, and students. This kind of job does take time, so you won't be able to accept such job while having a regular work with a regular time. Unless, the schedule fits perfectly and you can stay awake for almost 24 hours everyday.

I am not into such work, but it would be great if I have such job.

Is taking up a healthcare course very promising?

One of the most promising job when it comes to salary, benefits and work opportunities is healthcare jobs. To be in the healthcare job brings a lot of work opportunities like higher job offer from other hospital or clinics, or a good job offer abroad. When it comes to salary, being an experience health worker would advance you to a higher salary compare to other employees of the other field. Working in a hospital, clinic or any healthcare-related companies, the employees are entitled to a lot of benefits that most companies are not offering to their employees.

Asbestos Exposure Is Dangerous

There are asbestos that really smells good to keep our bathroom fresh. Warning, do not smell them directly on your nose. Although I remembered smelling asbestos in our bathroom because it has lemon flavor when I was still a kid, smelling them always and almost everyday would be dangerous to my health. Luckily, I know that those have chemicals and I shouldn't smell them everyday.

Being exposed in asbestos like those working in company and in plants where asbestos can be found, can make the workers sick and have mesothelioma cancer. Mesothelioma cancer is a rare cancer that develops when one has inhaled too much asbestos.

How about them? They work in a company where asbestos is involve. They should know that their health is at risk. Some may know, but many doesn't know. If they know the danger of being exposed too much in asbestos, why are they still working on that company? Life isn't good to all. So they would rather stay. At least they have work. They got money during payday. The only problem is, when they got that mesothelioma cancer. What if they had signed a contract that tells them that the company is not liable when they got sick because of asbestos? I'm just making up but there can be a company like that, right? Who would help them file Mesothelioma lawsuits against the company? Lucky, there are lots of company that is particularly handling cases of asbestors or mesothelioma relate issues.

A Job Offer... What to do???

I got a job offer. But I don't know what to do. I forgot to ask where did they find my profile. I'm not looking for a job right now. I am unemployed. I don't know if I still want to go back to programming jobs. Actually, I decline the good salary offer.

There's the urge inside me to look for a job. And this time, if I ever look for a job, it would be for good. I mean, I would be serious about being a programmer. Not that I'm not serious on my last job. But there's this "note" inside of me that it's okay to be late at work, it's okay to be absent at work, it's okay to do overtimes since I'm always late, it's okay to receive a salary that is way too small compare to what others thought about my salary amount...

When I went back to work, it would be just like before I joined the last company. It would be all work to be on the top, to achieve for experience, and of course to get salary increase. That would be my goal.

I think I learned my lesson. If it's work, it would be work. I know my last employers is expecting that I know those. But what about the initial agreement on why I would join the company? Trashed??? So now I understand, if the company gives a offer that is so fit to your lifestyle, it's just sweet talks for your yes.

The next time I work, I would make it to the point that I would be one of the best programmers the company have, for the benefit of salary increase =) And I would expect that an equivalent salary or increase would be offered.

Is money my God? Not at all of course. But I am not a hypocrite. Money isn't everything. But money is very important, so important that it can sometimes buy a person's moral. Money can either build a good future or destroy it. I choose a good future. I want to have lots of money, lots that it's enough for a good future, for a little shopping, for no worries. Is money important to you?

What's your career move?

I am a programmer. I have always been, and would be. I don't know if one day I should try other kind of job. An analyst, a database administrator? I am actually a one-man-team (woman!), well less the hardware and the network security =p

There are times when there are consultancy companies, or those we call head hunters or job agency who are looking (pooling most of the time) potential heads for their clients. If you are to find a job, it doesn't hurt to submit your resume to those kinds of firms. Most of them are hunting for IT related people. But to those who are not really on the IT side of the career, I think there are those firms that are looking/pooling people with medical degrees.

So, what's your career move? Do you plan straight to what you are in now, or you are thinking of a different career path? Are you a new graduate? What job do you really want? It's a matter of deciding and trying, accepting and trying, looking and trying... patience... love your work, love your decision, and again, patience.

On Career, which is more important, bigger salary or gaining knowledge?

My employer had explained to me and told me that in a career, gaining knowledge is more important than bigger salary.

Here's the deal.  Although you are paid with a smaller salary compare to others, you gain more knowledge with them.  What the heck!  So I got to say thank you to them?  And they though I gained a lot of knowledge because I work in their company.  How boastful.

My salary, although I shouldn't declare it here, it's 20,000 php per month, with an additional 5,000 php incentives per month because of a company I am expected to handle all request.  So my salary is 25,000 php in total.  I got no late and absent deduction.  I also have no over time pay.  It's a flat rate.

I think my friends are getting more than I do.  I also think that many others are getting more than I do, with less work compare to mine.

I am a programmer.  My job is to analyse the system they would assign to me, design and create the database, do the program and the reports, support the client for the software, and lastly... answer the phone at the office =p

I don't think we're analyzing simple systems.  Ooops I forgot, once my boss told me, "they" would analyze the system, and I would do the program.  Oh really, so you think analyzing a system is that easy.  "Talking" about the system, and "analyzing" the system, is a different thing.  If I don't need to analyze the system, then that means I don't need to think about the flow of the program that I would be doing, right?

Okay, so feeling ko, namamaliit ren ako sa work ko, really.  If ever na boss ko nagreread nito, you are free to react.  But be sure tama and straight to the point yung isasagot nyo sa akin, kasi oo lang ako ng oo  =)

I gain additional knowledge where ever I work.  It's simple.  Sa pananalita ng boss ko, parang sa kanila lang ako naggain ng knowledge.  Hindi po ako sa inyo pinakanaggain ng knowledge.  Pero don't tell me you guys didn't learn something from me.

I have really good employers when it comes to being friends.  But as employers, I don't think they are that ready yet.  You shouldn't tell to your people that gaining knowledge is the reason why we should work.  Mayaman kasi kayo.  Ako hindi.

You go to people who are trying their best to look for a job, those who are in need of money to feed their family.  Ask them whis is more important, getting bigger salary but with a job that is kind of boring, or gaining more knowledge with exciting job but with a salary that is smaller than those people who gets it bigger with the same kind of job.

If you are a newly graduate, or new to the career you are into, gaining knowledge is very important.  But you get paid for what ever you do, and you gain knowledge for what ever you deliver to your employer.  It should be balance.

I just want to say that getting a bigger salary is more important to me than gaining knowledge.

Super Busy At Work

I really can't believe the company where I am working.  May they read this or not, I don't care.  This is my blog, my property.  Sino man ang tututol, aapila, kunwari concern or mag-eexplain, wala akong pakialam.  Again, this is my blog. I unplug my not happy moments here.  So pasensyahan.

I don't know if it's just me or the company.  I had never been too busy before.  I might be so busy beating deadlines on the previous company.  But it's a different thing in this company.

I am willing to beat deadlines and push the limits when needed, provided that good compensation is given.  I hate it when my boss tells me that I got all the perks I need on their company.  I may have a free lunch.  But I would rather have my salary increase.  I may be always late at work.  But I do work more than 9 hours everyday.  I might have friendship with my boss.  But this is work.  Money matters ika nga.

I hope I can stop working as a programmer.  I hate the situation I'm into right now.

Programmers Are Tiny Gods

According to Powazek of Powazek.com, programmers are tiny Gods. Here's his full post.

In this series, I’m exploring the stories about work I find myself coming back to a lot. I call them Things I Learned the Hard Way.

I’ve already talked about designers and how their critique training makes them impossible to work with. Now let’s look at the other side of the coin: programmers.

In Genesis, God creates things in a certain order. Why plants before animals? I dunno. It just seemed right to Him. (Don’t worry, it’s just a metaphor.)

Programmers are the same way. In any programming language, there will be many ways to solve a problem. The right way to do it is a personal decision, made by the programmer, just like in Genesis.

Programmers are the Gods of their tiny worlds. They create something out of nothing. In their command-line universe, they say when it’s sunny and when it rains. And the tiny universe complies.

So it’s no wonder that, in team meetings, programmers can behave like fickle Gods. “No we couldn’t possibly do it that way,” they’ll say. And they may have reasons, or maybe it’s just not the way things are done in their universe.

So if you’re working with a programmer, you have to treat him or her like a God. You have to pray. You cannot issue edicts. You have to come on bended knee. “Here’s the problem I have. I need a solution. Please help.”

The good news is, programmers want their work to be used, and the good ones know that the design matters. So programmers and designers actually have the same goal: getting the stuff used. If each can honor the talents of the other, great things can happen.

A good technique I’ve found is to be very specific with the result I’m looking for, and the reasons why. “When a user clicks X, Y should happen immediately, because if there’s a lag, we’ll lose people.”

Like designers, if you give a programmer a problem with parameters, they’ll apply every bit of genius they have to solve it in the best possible way. If you tell them how to do it, you’ll suffer the wrath of an angry God.

I would like to second the motion. But on the part that says you got to bend to your knees, maybe it's kind of an exageration which just means, give your problem to the programmer, and let the programmer solve the problem and help you.

We programmers really love solving problems and helping you to make your business better. Maybe not all programmers are like that, but if you would find a good programmer, then you'll get a simple working program for your company.

We programmers also hate higher level non-programmer people on a company who tells us what to do. We are the programmer. If you are not the system analyst or anyone who is logically good on the job related to us, just stay put.

How to be an effective Team Leader?

Managers and team leaders are both important in a company. There are so many discussions on who is better, the manager or the team leader. In a company the manager has his own task, and the team leader has a different task. Usually, team leaders are the one taking care of the team. That's why they are called "team leaders". Managers on the other hand are concerned with the project deadline, project presentation, and is the middleman between the team leader and the company's client.

On this post, we are talking about team leaders, on how to be an effective team leader.

As a team leader, you got to trust your members. You should know their strength and weakness, and how it would benefit the whole team. As a team leader, you should act as the representative of the team, not as the manager or owner of the company. You should also show respect on the decisions and suggestions of your team members.

Do not say "I had finished the project." But instead, recognize your team and say "My team are done with the project." "My team", meaning your team, the group of people under you. Don't think that when the project is done, you would claim that you did the project. You are the team leader, or project leader. The team's success if your success and benefit because you can boast that you have a great team. You don't need to declare that you yourself did the project.

There are actually people who got problems on using possessive pronouns at work. Employers, managers, team leaders, team members... a lot may not know how to address someone's work properly. Again, managers and owners of a company, this also applies to you guys. It's more professional to say "We would fix the problem." instead of "I would fix the problem." especially if you are not the one who would actually fix the problem.

Now you're thinking, you're the boss or the team leader, they are just your employees/team members. Right pronoun use, respect and trust would give your team a boost, thus making you an effective team leader. And not only that, it's totally a wrong way to use pronouns at work.

There would be a part 2 for this article.

I Want My Headphone Back!!!

  • I bought a headphone so I can listen to music while working without others inside the room.
  • One of my boss' niece asked if he could lend the headphone. He'll brought the headphone upstairs. Our office is my boss' house.
  • After several days, headphone was not yet brought back.
  • Several days more, I asked if the headphone is still in use. Boss said he'll get it for me. He tried to look. He didn't found any headphone.
  • After some days, I asked again while we're upstairs having lunch. He said that he'll get it. Then he checked the tables. Found nothing.
  • After some days, when all of us were upstairs having lunch, I asked again. But I got this not-so-nice (I think) tone "Yung headphone? Bakit, kailangan mo ba?". Then later I got this "Nandyan lang yun, hanapin mo na lang."
  • I tried looking for it. None. Wala.
I got this bad impression na. Buti na lang I don't buy expensive headphones like skullcandy kundi talaga naman!!!

I still got some issues with them that I do always tell my other boss. Since we got the girl who applied through this blog, if ever those issues happened again, ewan ko lang!!! Pay day issue! Ok lang sa akin, but there are times na I really am expecting the money because I need the money.

Hayyyyyyyyyyyyyyzzzzzzzzz

I turned down a job offer in Malaysia

I am sad for turning down a job offer from a big IT company in Malaysia :(

It's a good pay I think. I can save double or more than I am saving here. It's just that, if I would leave my baby and go to Malaysia for work, the pay should be a lot bigger.

And I'm afraid my baby would not know me if I accepted the job offer :( But hubby and mother-in-law assured me that there's the web cam for us to video chat.

Every time there's an offer, it seems like a challenge for me: to accept the job offer or not. I am not looking for a new employer right now. As of now, I am willing to stay in the company even though I didn't get any salary increase for two years, and even though I didn't get any bonus since I joined the company.

There's this "season" when job offers come to me. Not only one company, but two or more. If I would leave the company, as I have already told my employers (I hope they still remember those), it's going to be the following reasons:

  • Both of us didn't agreed on something. (This might not happen as I just accept what they give me.)

  • I need more money.

  • A really big offer (to the max, at least for me) comes.

The last reason, I do really need more even before. My husband and I want to save money for our Ivan's future. But with the salary I get which is not that small, and his commissions, we can't save money.

My husband is planning on something. I am not planning anything at all. But offers are coming. What should I do?

I'm Sick. I'm Tired!!!

I am sick again. Got into too much work... pressured at work. Too much work!!!

For the past few days... I go to work an hour late for everyday. But I go home two hours after the office hours. Then I have my lunch for just about 10 minutes. I don't use break times. Hmmmm we don't actually have break times. We can have a break when we feel like eating. Working as a one woman army is okay with me. But now, it's just too much. Well, I'm not really a one woman army because one of my boss also is a programmer. But with all the work, I think I can get double the salary on other companies, I think. I guess they would need to look for a stronger and better programmer who can deal with all the work. There are a lot programmers better than me. But only I that I am the only one who would be willing with that salary, with all that work, with all the hectic schedules. Maybe there would also be some others =) Am I boasting, or I'm just a dumb one to accept this.

Then at home, when I arrive home, I started to take care of my baby. I take care of him up to morning. That means there are in betweens on nights when my baby would cry for milk. The from time to time, I do check if my baby is still on the bed (not on the floor). We put the bed foam on the bed, so when my baby falls, we won't panic. And ohhhh my husband's snore, it's too loud.

So just imagine all of the pressure. Right now, I want to have a vacation, away from work, away from my family. I want a vacation that's just me, and maybe a girl friend of mine. She's a Pinay. I miss her a lot. You would ask, "Away from your baby too?" I would answer, "Yes."

Everything is too much for me now. I just need a little break. That's all I want.

And maybe this year, or next year (I'll give the company other chance), I'll look for a better job.

PS: Sorry to all those blogs I have not visited. I really am sick. I can't check on your blogs even I want too. I can't even update my own blog =(

Until when will I be a programmer?

I'm just thinking of when would I stop working as a programmer? I'm 29 years old, going 30 this coming February. And maybe when my son started schooling, I might stop to take care of his assignments, to tutor him, to send him to school, and all those school-related stuff.

All those I have mentioned above, those makes me think... Until when will I be a programmer?

Or maybe when I take another step to have a business. But I don't have money for business. So where did all my salaries and online income goes? All the money goes to baby Ivan's needs, household expenses, my husband's gasoline. Some goes to my food and clothes which are only a few. And others goes to the Jollibee food and toys for my husband's niece. The last one, I hate the last one.

25,000.00 PHP + 10,000.00 PHP, and nothing goes to savings!!!

How can I stop working? Am I the bread winner? Well, I just felt I wish I'm a single mom!!!
